Back from B.C.!

We're back from a 10-day road trip across the border to British Columbia, where we attended and photographed our friends' Chuck & Sarah's wedding weekend at a stunning mountain lodge. On the road trip we did the short version Nat'l Park tour: Tetons (WY), Yellowstone (WY), and Glacier (MT). Absolutely spectacular country! We'll be posting pictures soon of the wedding day and some great landscapes. Here's a few teasers from Island Lake Lodge where Chuck and Sarah had their wedding weekend, and one from Glacier Nat'l Park. Check back later this week for more!

Pregnant!

We're beyond words in excitement about being pregnant. The baby is due in January (thanks, Baby T, for coming in between wedding seasons!) Lynn is feeling great having carried through her first trimester....we already feel the "time flying by" of having a child. Regardless, we're so happy and wanted to share the news with all our friends, family, and clients out there. Thanks for your support!

Todd & Katherine - Mountain Bliss

Ten Mile Station on the mountainside of Breckenridge, Colorado was the perfect location for Todd and Katherine's wedding. Two words come to mind....beautiful and relaxed....the mountain weather couldn't have been more spectacular (three days before the wedding Lynn and I were there to scout photo locations and it was snowing)...their dog Lucy was very well behaved during the ceremony....and the flowers put together by Bloom were amazing.

As you know through Illumine Photography, I am able to express my love for expectant mothers and children, and this has become such an important part of our lives. Additionally, we are constantly finding our path to a greener, healthier world through our lives & our business. So you can imagine how thrilled we were to discover "Mindful Mama," a magazine that will soon be launching in print and on the web. Their mission is so inline with our own, that it truly felt like we were meant to cross paths with the magazine's creator & Editor-In-Chief, Sarah Kraft. (Have a look at Mindful Mama here!)

Sarah is so passionate about a mother's right to be educated about birth choices, that you can't help but be moved when listening to her. Sarah is one of those people who not only has a vision, but acts on it and makes it a reality. Being in her presence is so inspiring and uplifting! This weekend, we were gifted with the opportunity of joining Sarah in Telluride for an interview with Ani DiFranco!!

We've always wanted to experience the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and what a way to do it! Dave videotaped and I photographed the interview. Ani is such an inspirational mindful mama herself, and being at the interview was just amazing. She is so down to earth and REAL. We had a great time listening to Sarah interview Ani about motherhood, touring as a musician and mother, and life in general. Afterwards, we were treated to her performance and the rest of the bands that day at the music festival. Music, mountains, moms....what an awesome time!

Tom & Julie - dentists in love

Tom & Julie met in the dental industry, both practice dentistry in Iowa, and had bubble gum at their wedding reception. How cool is that? This was our first wedding for this year, and it was great to photograph such a fun and relaxed couple! They had a beautiful wedding at St. Elizabeth's, and a super fun reception at the Brown Palace downtown. Congratulations Tom & Julie!!

Highlands Mommies

We had the pleasure of attending and photographing the Highlands Mommies annual picnic on Sunday. The Highlands Mommies is a parent networking group in northwest Denver with over 1000 members! There must have been 3-400 at the picnic, with lots of awesome food, face painting, fire engines spraying water; the picnic works.

We were there photographing for Lynn's Illumine Photography , so we held a series of mini photo sessions with families and their kids, and shot a ton of candids throughout the afternoon. We left there with well over four hundred great shots of all the incredible cuteness. As you can imagine, picking our favorites from that many is an impossible task, but here's a large handful of favs to make you say "awwww"...

Heath & Erin are getting married....

We had a great time with Heath and Erin at Daniels Park in Castle Pines, CO for their engagement shoot. They were brave and took our suggestion to get up early for some great morning light. The weather was a tiny bit chilly, but the blue skies and gorgeous views of the foothillls and mountains made it totally worthwhile. We are really looking forward to their wedding in September, congratulations Heath and Erin!

Sammy & Kosmo

Our friends Jesse & Trista were heading out of town, so we had their dogs Sammy & Kosmo over for a long weekend. They are such the brother & sister, playing, fighting, snuggling. Sammy is a medium sized mixed breed, sweet as can be with a perpetual puppy face. Kosmo is a whipit, a breed that looks like a miniature greyhound. He's super low key, really lovey and....well....fast. We had a couple days at the dog park so they could romp around together, and It was great to see Kosmo really let loose and turn the jets on. Check out these pics...

Chicago Basin Ski Adventure

Last week I was lucky enough to hook up with my friend Chuck and some of the Neptune Mountaineering posse on a greeaaat ski trip to the San Juans in southwestern CO. The trip had fun times and adventure written all over it:

1) Drive to Silverton, CO.
2) Take Durango/Silverton Narow Gauge Railroad to a halfway stop in the middle of the wilderness.
3) Get off train.
4) Hike 6 miles up into Chicago Basin and camp in the snow.
5) Hike up/ski down three 14ers in two days.
6) Catch train back to Silverton.
7) Go home.

here's the scoop on our lines for the day. south Eolus with its east couloir on the left, north Eolus on the right. red is the hike ascents, and green is the ski descents. can somebody give me an Amen?

we finished our ski day at 1:30pm, nothing but warm sunny blue skies all afternoon. absolutely nothing to do but eat, nap, talk, eat again, and sleep. all in all not a bad way to take in the afternoon, eh?

chuck and the boys scrambled to the summit, then we all hung out and let the snow thaw out to optimal mashed potato consistency. the conspicuous lack of wind was amazing at 13,500ft. as dan put it: "i could have come up here and sorted my tax receipts".

Green Wedding Contest Official Rules

It's Official! The 2008 Green Wedding Contest has begun, and we're so excited for all of our wedding couples to participate! Remember, the contest applies to any couples that book with us in 2008, so there's still time if you're just starting to plan your wedding.

Each couple will need to fill out an application which we will send to you electronically. The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2008. Please see the official rules below!

David Lynn Photography “2008 Green Wedding Contest” Rules

1. To be eligible, couples must be getting married in 2008 and must book with David Lynn Photography, LLC. Wedding Collections must be paid in their entirety according to the timeline stated on their Wedding Photography Contract.

2. To enter, couples must electronically submit a typed application including all the ways they have remained socially and environmentally conscious throughout the planning and completion of their wedding. Submission deadline is DECEMBER 31, 2008. Winners will be notified in January 2009.

3. David and Lynn Townsend will judge all applicants based on creativity, use of “green” elements, and degree of environmental and social consciousness throughout the wedding.

Tele Love

Without a doubt, telemarking skiing is one of my favorite things. Playing in the snow is fun. Period. Lynn is the first to admit that I have a very certain contentment after a day (or even a few hours) of making turns. I always really liked to ski, but it wasn't until I followed suit of my friends and picked up telemarking that I really LOVED to ski. Sure, telemarking is harder to do, its not as fast as alpine skis or snowboarding, it wears your legs out faster, but that's not what it's about. The "love of tele" that I have was summed up pretty nicely by an article I read a while back. I've saved the quote and come back to it quite often...

"Here’s the conventional wisdom: Telemark skiing is stupid for so many reasons. It is an inefficient way to get down the mountain - all those deep knee bends!....."Ironically, the freedom of the heels actually puts us in bondage: bondage to inefficiency."

"But really, telemark skiing is not about efficiency. It is about love. And if loving telemark skiing is wrong, then I don’t wanna be right. I love to make the tele turn. I love the feel of the carve. The angulation. The proximity to the snow. The absolute level of physical engagement required to make the turn. There’s just so much going on. Knees, heels, arms, shoulders, toes. I know it may be inefficient, but I simply don’t care. I love it. It's my turn."

This morning I spent a few hours on Loveland's Ridge, where they reported 6 inches of new snow, but it actually skiied like it was a foot of new. That's just the kind of winter its been. I don't like to throw around a work like "epic" too much, but its been pretty epic. Whenever I hear somebody say "I'm sooo sick of winter", I just smile and quietly wish it would never end in the high country.

To any of you who have always wondered what's so great about it, or were always just curious to try tele, I must urge you to try it. Now. Go.

Jayden Thomas Hughes

Meet baby Jayden!

You may recognize Steve & Gina Hughes from our website. They have become very dear friends of ours after photographing their wedding a few years ago. Many people have asked about our photo of "the couple on the lake." It's them!!

I am absolutely fascinated and drawn to the process of pregnancy, birth and life with children. Steve & Gina lovingly allowed me to be a part of their process, and I photographed them several times throughout their pregnancy. I am thrilled that they will have these memories to share with their son as he grows.

Steve & Gina have an incredible bond that literally shines when you are around them. I was so honored to finally meet their son, who SHINES so brightly, too! I spent part of a day with Gina while she cared for Jayden, bathed him, and made him smile countless times. Steve came home from work and we were able to catch a few more shots before Jayden let us know he was done modeling for the day :)

Congratulations on your beautiful family, Steve & Gina :) We look forward to many more photos and memories to come!!

Beautiful Family

Dave and I spend so much time with my family since they are right here in Denver with us. I am so GRATEFUL!! I can't tell you how much they all mean to me.

We have been so blessed to be around our nephews, Owen and Wesley, as they grow. In fact, I was lucky enough to live with my brother & sister-in-law for the first 6 months of Owen's life. It has changed me forever.

I was going back through our Christmas photos from this year, and procrastinator that I am, my family hasn't even seen any of these images yet..... ooops :) But, hey, we can celebrate Christmas in April, can't we?? :)

Owen is now 3 1/2 years old, and Wesley is 15 months. Andy & Lisa (my brother & sis-in-law) are incredible parents. I swear they have more fun with these boys in a day than some may have in their whole life-- what lucky boys! We are constantly taking "mental notes" on their parenting when the day comes for us.

Thank you to both of our families for loving us unconditionally. You enrich our lives every day, and we LOVE you ALL!!!

My sister-in-law Amy taught all of the "girls" how to knit this past winter, and this is the scarf that I made for my Grandmother. It turned out pretty funny, with squigly lines and random holes, but as a grandmother does, she loves it :) Can you believe she's 97 years old?? She is SOOO beautiful!

This month's images are from our recent trip to Hawaii (see also blog post "Ha-Wow-ii". We spent a week of our time on Maui, and went on a great 8-hour hike on top of the Haleakala volcano. The landscape is truly surreal, best described as walking on the moon. (At least that's what the moon looked like last time we were there). There were cinder cones everywhere, and the Silversword plants scattered the landscape. These are found only on the Hawaiian islands, and they only bloom a tall stalk of foliage every 50 years. Pretty impressive, and a really cool plant to photograph! I found myself huddled next to these plants, just getting lost in the fuzzy coated swords. Check'em out HERE!

Tamara & Max's Engagement

Ha-wow-i'i

Well, we have to say, of all the islands we've been to, the Hawaiian islands are the most beautiful. All the hype is real...the surf is amazing, the interior mountains and rain forests are gorgeous, the volcanoes otherworldly, and the seafood is superb. We had the added bonus of being there during the humpback whale migration to the islands. They spend 4-5 winter months in the warm Hawaiian waters, then head back to Alaska for the summer. Nice life they've got worked out for themselves! We were gifted a show every day, watching the whales play in the water offshore, surfacing, blowing air, slapping their tails, and full breach leaps out of the water....an absolutely amazing thing to witness.

If my math is correct,
4 days on Kauai + 7 days on Maui = 11 days of Enjoyment.

the napali coast...incredible cliffs dropping 1000 feet into the ocean. the kahalua trail skirts along the cliffs, dropping down onto beaches, past waterfalls, and through rain forest...

ohhhh, rainforest. i get it now...

easily one of the muddiest hikes we've ever been on...

the humpbacks were a never ending source of entertainment and amazement all week. we'd wake up with the sunrise, and have coffee on the balcony with the binoculars trained on the bay looking for whales for hours...

this was a cool sighting of a group of three whales, one diving and showing its tail, one coming up for air, and the other surfacing and showing off its "hump".

this was the best shot i got of a full breach. he was about 200 yards off our whale watching boat, super windy and choppy conditions, and i managed to catch him before he crashed into the water. truly awesome.

they brought their dog Mike D all the way from denver to live with them on maui for a few months. he had it made, hanging on the beach...

me on my first ever surf attempt...uh, don't we need waves for this? although i didn't catch one this day, the next afternoon was awesome. caught a couple good waves for my first official surf experience. i felt very don ho/laird hamilton.

Ok, we admit its been a long time since we've posted to the blog. The holidays took us out of town for a few weeks, and since the new year, its been a whirlwind of wedding album designing, home selling and home searching. Now that the dust has settled, we're able to open up the lines of communication and get back in touch with all our friends, clients, and groupies. Ok, we don't know of any groupies, but in case there's one or two out there....

This week will surely be mark the return of the David Lynn eye candy, as we head to Kauai and Maui for 10 days. This is my first trip there, so I am reeeaaally looking forward to this one. We can't wait to get posting again, starting with images from the islands!

Hawaii!

We're off to the islands tomorrow! Honolulu-Kauai-Maui. Sooo psyched to be visiting there for the first time. Lynn's been there once, so she can't wait to get back of course. Ok, so the forecast calls for showers all week. But who cares? That's why God created the Pina Colada, right? We'll be checking back in after the trip with lots of images from the the land of volcanoes. Cheers to all...

David Lynn ~ The Sign

This Christmas, the family all decided to save money, go a little green, and give gifts that met the criteria of being either eco- friendly, handmade, or very inexpensive. I think we all impressed each other with the gifts we turned out. Everybody's creativity came through strong. Lynn and I (admittedly mostly Lynn) sewed handmade cloth napkins and shopping bags...my sister Laura gave napkins and hand beaded the rings..oh, and she made Christmas stockings...my sister Amy made awesome beaded jewelry...my mom made Sleeping Beauty dresses (exactly to spec) for nieces Katie and Julie (see adorable-ness below)...and my brother-in-law Mike did wood carvings for Laura and us.

For us, Mike(and Amy)'s idea was to carve our David Lynn Photography logo. We were speechless when we opened the gift and saw it ~ a gorgeous relief of our logo carved in a ponderosa pine handmade/carved plaque. It really blew us away. It's funny how we'd been talking about a sign for months ~ and Mike carved us one ~ and we now have the perfect sign for our new home studio. Let's just say...we're impressed. Thanks Mike and everyone else!

GRATEFULNESS

I have to admit that Dave posts the majority of our blog posts, and I am definitely indebted to him :) This morning, I have been working on our photos, and I wanted to share with you all how GRATEFUL I am. I am so grateful for my amazing husband..... I honestly never imagined that I would have the chance to marry someone as supportive, warm, full of life, honest, and hilarious :) as Dave is. We are compatible in ways that I never knew, and it is such a blessing to me that we get to work together daily. I love you babe :)

I am so grateful for the creation of David Lynn Photography. It took a huge leap of faith and a belief that our passion of photography would lead to something great. It has surpassed that. It has given us countless experiences to capture LOVE, and this has been the greatest gift. Experiencing the love between two people as they choose to join their lives and souls is incredible. Anyone who has been to a truly powerful wedding has seen this. But to watch it through the lens and actually capture these moments so that the couple never forgets.....this is amazing.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to live our lives through our passions. I am so grateful that our lives are built around experiencing love on a deep and truthful level, and I am so grateful to be doing all of this with my husband.

The other day I was thinking about how long its been since I've updated my townsendphotography.com website. It was my last solo trip...let's see...to africa. Oh Ma Gawd...that was in 2003.....Krikey! Four years ago?? That's really sad. "Why no updates?" you ask? I built the site myself (with a template start from a friend) that proved to be too time intensive and cumbersome to update the code, links to pages, links to those pages, links back to the other pages....you get the idea. Well, that will happen no longer.

I am pleased to announce I'm in the final stages of designing my New and Improved, face-lifted and updated website! I can barely contain myself, and I've been working on it long, late hours. Launch date isn't far away, and believe me, you'll know when its ready.

TRAPEZE - Forget the Fear, Think about the Addiction!

To celebrate our sister-in-law Lisa's birthday, Andy came up with the great idea to go to Trapeze school! It's not so much a "class" as it is just getting harnessed up and giving it a fly. What an unbelievably fun time! The Imperial Flyers is an amateur Flying Trapeze and Circus Arts club operating a rig in Westminster, Colorado. They show you the ropes and then you just take turns flying on the trapeze bar. We were even able to pull off a couple tricks. It's pretty much a jungle gym for big kids. Perfect for our group, we're going back for sure!

my best advice is don't read the waiver, it'll only scare you. just sign it...

Erin and Scott are such great people, and we struck an instant rapport with them the night we met to talk about their wedding. Erin summed up our feelings about working with them in a thank you letter she wrote us after the wedding:

Finch Wedding ~ Evergreen, Colorado

Meet Jill & Finch...actually, Jill is now Mrs. Finch. Finch is still Finch. And he's Ryan. Well, Ryan Finch. Mr. and Mrs. Ryan Finch. Or just Mr. and Mrs. Finch. Or just "Jill & Finch" as they've been called ever since they were dating. Don't bother making sense of any of that, all you need to know is these are two fun people. We had so much fun photographing them all evening, and we even had a lot of people in common at their wedding, including Robin who married us last year. How cool that was to see her performing another ceremony since ours!

Many congratulations Mr. and Mrs Finch! You guys are fantastic people, and we wish you many, many happy times ahead!

Jon & Angie - 5 Course Wedding Celebration

Jon & Angie had a fantastic, intimate wedding at Samplings Restaurant in Frisco, CO. They surrounded themselves with just their close family and friends, and LOTS of amazing food! Their ceremony was short and very, very sweet, with everyone gathered in the front of the restaurant to witness their marriage. We're always blown away when a 6-minute civil ceremony in the front of a restaurant can move you to tears as much (if not more) as a 1-hour mass in a grand chapel! For those of you out there worrying a little too much about the details of your wedding, take it from Angie & Jon....what matters most is the two of you and the people there to celebrate with you.

The ceremony was followed by cocktails, and an amazing 5-course meal. We have to give a huge plug to Samplings Restaurant in Frisco, those guys put out an awesome spread, with amazing food combinations and fantastic wine pairings with every course! Highly recommended!

Another Green Step

How do you turn over the green leaf and live your life a little more eco-friendly? Start small. There's million little ways to make a big difference. In David Lynn Photography's quest to green up our wedding business, we finally (admittedly, much later than we intended) switched over to rechargeable batteries. I know this sounds incredibly mundane...but we're honestly psyched about it. Especially when you consider we motor through about 24 AA batteries per wedding to power our flashes and battery packs. That totalled at least 350 batteries this year alone...

So this is a photo of the last batch of dead batteries we will throw away and have them end up sitting for decades in some landfill. That's green...so small, so simple.

And as a tribute to Chris Jordan's photography...here's a the composite portrait of our battery consumption just for weddings this year. They're all probably sitting in a landfill somewhere right now. Now you get the idea of how a small change will have a bigger result...

This image of the new Mrs. Erin Todd is one Lynn captured on the Inverness golf course on Saturday. We were just wrapping up our mini photo session with Erin & Scott when we noticed the sun had peeked out from a day's worth of clouds. It was almost sundown and we had a small window of time, so we scurried over to the middle of the fairway where the sun was still shining and got some fantastic images. This one is hands-down my favorite Shot of The Month!

Anniversary Roadtrip!

For our 1-year anniversary we decided to take an abbreviated version of our honeymoon roadtrip. We ended up heading to Southwest Colorado for Westy camping, great food, wine tasting, hiking, and being all shmoopy with each other for a few days. Its always nice to turn your back on emails and electronics for a while...my phone conveniently died on the day we left, and Lynn's wouldn't charge the whole time, so we didn't even hear a phone ring for 5 days. Aaaaahhhhhh....

Have coffee, make road trip!

First stop, Palisade CO....just in time for some wine tasting at Grande River Vineyard. We closed down the tasting bar and picked up a couple of their reserves and port! We wandered the grapes and snacked on a few afterward...

We made it to Telluride the next day and took a little hike up to and above Bridal Veil Falls. Gorgeous views of the valley from up there.

Backyard Elk

Lynn and I are housesitting for some friends that live in the foothills, and wildlife abounds here in the open spaces. Deer, elk, fox, lion, and who knows what else. Wildlife photography is definitely something that I love and only had a few opportunities to actually do. To do it well and come away with really striking images, its a lot harder than you think. Most of the time you need time and patience to plan, track, wait, and shoot wildlife images. So I've been loving the fact that all I have to do is walk onto the back deck and scout the open space for animals! Its almost armchair wildlife photography! We've been totally enjoying the herds of elk that roam here, and most days and during dinners on the back deck have been accompanied by lovely elk bugle serenades. One of the bulls was wandering around behind the house last week. Such majestic animals, most of the time we just watch them and listen...but we have to take the opportuniy for a few images....

This morning I had to slowly creep my way down the hillside to a vantage point to get a good angle. Its such a cool feeling to get stared down by a large animal....

He was giving himself a nice antler massage in the tree limbs for a good 5 minutes....

Anniversary!

Lynn and I celebrated our 1-year anniversary last week by taking a road trip down to southwest Colorado. Again borrowing our friends' Westy, we took off for 4 days to see if, after a year, we can still live in a van together. Ha ha ha, of course we can! In fact, its one of our favorite things to do....Our route took us through Palisade, Ridgway, Telluride, and Ouray. We got to check out some cool corners of Colorado we hadn't seen yet, and we hit a couple of our favorite spots that we visited on our honyemoon a year ago. The song "Memories" should be ringing around in your head by now.....Pictures to follow soon.

Terry & Chris

We had an amazing time photographing Terry & Chris's wedding at Beaver Creek’s Ritz Carlton last weekend. What an incredible venue!

They put so much thought into making their wedding a unique and memorable event for their family and friends. The day before the wedding, Chris, his father & groomsmen donned kilts and swords for the rehearsal (and didn’t stop laughing the entire night!) Terry gave each bridesmaid a special necklace, which housed a small piece of a clock to signify her gratitude for the time they had spent together over the years. They also offered each guest a river stone with a special message painted on them to take with their namecard.

Terry’s father, Jim toasted the couple as soon as everyone was seated with a special bottle of Anisette that he had been saving just for Terry’s wedding. As the Italian tradition goes, if he liked the man that Terry chose to marry, he would open this special bottle of liquor on their wedding night…. Chris passed the test with flying colors!

Terry & Chris worked with Alyssa at the Ritz Carlton and hired Kathy Vaughn of A Beautiful Memory to help with the coordination, and they worked their tails off! Great job, you two; we hope to work with you again soon!

The river stones each had a saying painted on them, everyone took one home with them. Such a great idea and a cool keepsake from the wedding.

They had the most amazing cake we've seen yet. It was chocolate love, with words iced around every layer and built on a tilt! The thing looked like it was going to fall over at any moment. I can only describe it as a Dr. Suess cake. And delicious!! Check out the creations at Eat Dessert First...

Sarah & Steve's Downtown Wedding

Sarah & Steve had a great time with their close friends and family celebrating their marriage in complete elegance. Sarah got ready at the Adagio B&B in Denver, and their wedding was at 1770 Sherman Street, an awesome building built in 1906 with a beautiful Byzantine-themed ballroom. They had the coolest mix of style and simplicity throughout their wedding day, it was great to work with them from the start. Congratulations Steve & Sarah, and have an amazing time in Peru!

Lynn and I take off Friday morning for a great long weekend in the mountains! Friday and Saturday we're photographing Terry & Chris's wedding at the Ritz Carlton Bachelor Gulch, arguably the swankiest mountain hotel in Colorado. Friday, their rehearsal dinner is at a lodge on the Beaver Creek Ski Mountain, and then we'll be photographing all day Saturday for the wedding event back at the Ritz! On Sunday, we're hitting the Ritz pool & spa in the morning, then heading to the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Festival to see Michael Franti, Allman Brothers, Susan Tedeschi, Leftover Salmon....can't wait for all that! Mark & Whitney's Mt. Princeton wedding

We headed up to Mt. Princeton Hot Springs last week to photograph Mark & Whitney's wedding. They are a super cool couple, and Lynn and I were amazed how much they reminded us our ourselves. So many things about their wedding and laid back style were similar to our own, which made photographing really fun. To make the weekend more enjoyable, we arranged lodging at our friend's teepee about 10 miles away. This was the first time we prepared for a wedding in the great outdoors, complete with a sun shower in the morning before changing into our wedding attire! M&W's wedding was fantastic, despite threatening rainclouds hovering around, and even a little rain during Whitney's bridal photography session. She was totally chill and stood in the rain, smiling away, dress getting soaked and not a worry in the world. Mark and the boys started their day off right with a great game of mountain bocce ball. Thanks for having us there you guys, we had a blast!

Clint & Megan's Wedding

We've had some awesome weddings the past couple weeks, including another downtown Denver event. Clint & Megan got married at St. Elizabeth's and then they were off to the Brown Palace for their sweet ballroom reception which had it all: a fantastic band, awesome cakes, teary eyed toasts, a champagne cascade tower, a fraternity serenade for Megan, and lots of dancing. And I was already impressed with the fact that Clint was able to tie his own bowtie. The guy's got talent, and now he has an awesome wife! Enjoy the day...

Brian & Angie's Wedding!

Saturday we photographed Angie & Brian Martorella's wedding in Denver. They got married at Bethany Lutheran Church, and the reception was at Cherry Hills Country Club, always a fantastic place for celebration! This wedding was really special for us to photograph, because (are you ready for this?) ~ Lynn's brother's wife is Angie's cousin...got it?....which makes me the husband of Lynn who's brother's wife is Angie's cousin....anyway, it was great that we had the chance to photograph lots of people we know and love, which adds a huge bonus for our work. Now back to the wedding!

By the time we got over to the country club after the ceremony, the afternoon rain had moved in. Angie and Brian had no problems marching out onto the golf course in the rain for some great pictures! And we were so happy when the rest of the wedding party did the same. Rebecca and Terry from Cherry Hills CC were great organizers, and they helped us by holding umbrellas, driving the golf cart, and keeping the whole evening running smoothly.

Angie looked absolutely gorgeous, and Brian looked awesome. Both of them were on Cloud 9 the entire day! We were honored to be their photographers ~ Thanks Angie and Brian! Have fun in Bora Bora!!

Joe & Betsy's Wedding

Joe and Betsy are REALLY fun people ~ they were both great to work with because they knew exactly what they wanted to have for their wedding...and they made it happen. They were gifted by a beautiful Colorado day. I rode along with Joe & the guys for golf in the morning, and Betsy and the ladies had a relaxing morning of hair and make-up at Hotel Teatro downtown. The weather threatened some dark clouds during the ceremony, but all that really happened was some cool breeze through the tent and a few sprinkles during the group pictures on the golf course.

They had the most amazing gospel choir that came out as a surprise to the guests duruing the ceremony; you have never heard anything like them! They were absolutely amazing... singing directly from their souls, and all the guests felt it. Lynn & I got chills just listening; even more inspiration for taking pictures!

Thanks Joe & Betsy, we had a fantastic day with you guys!

The Incomparable Zula

Lynn and I were devastated last week when we got the news our dog Zula, our friend for 10 years, had cancer that had started in her spleen and already spread to her liver and lungs. The vet sent us home with the "nothing we can do" diagnosis, and we spent a tough week with her, giving her all the good food we could feed her, and searching for alternative methods of treatment or a sort of "cure" to at least suppress the spread of the cancer. We simply ran out of time, and 10 days later she took a quick turn for the worse, and we were with her early in the morning when she died at our bedside. Its so hard to not have her here by our side, at our feet, following us everywhere, going for rides, playing at the park, hiking in the mountains, and giving us a huge doggy smile and kisses when we come home.

Zula was far more than a dog, and we were not pet owners. We were friends to each other.

We miss her more than word can express, and the past few days we've found happiness, sadness, and comfort in looking at LOTS of photographs of her from a decade of friendship. She was my favorite subject (at least before Lynn came along, then they both got top billing :) And we wanted to share some of those images with everyone. Zula had a great life, and we'll look at these pictures for a long time and have her here next to us again in spirit.

Zula's hunting style was priceless. I've seen coyotes and foxes hunt, and she emulated their style exactly. She'd wait, ears perked, waiting for a varmint to stir, and when it made a break, she'd leap (sometimes straight up) and pounce. There was one time she actually leapt up, FROZE in mid air, changed direction and pounced. It was unbelievable (and I have a witness to back me up, right Craig?) It was a great treat to watch her at her sharpest, and a rarity to be able to catch her in the act. I was sooo psyched to finally nab a couple great shots of her doing what she absolutely lived for...

Last weekend we hung out with friends Stephan & Carrie on their land near Salida. We escaped the heat by running Brown's Canyon on their raft for both days. The water's still running super high, which was great news for all of us, because Carrie's a great guide and likes to hit the holes head on. So it was fun fun fun.

Nights were full of good dinners, drinking lots of wine, and running an assembly line of S'mores! The only pictures from the weekend were a handful I took one night. Everyone else was getting dinner prepped (thanks again!), the half moon was out, and Venus was shining super bright. Them's good makings for night photography, one of my favorite times to photograph. I forgot the tripod, so I had to go old school and rest the camera on my photo backpack and hit the self-timer. I'm always amazed how much light and color you can find at night....

Breana & Phil had a good idea of the kind of place they wanted to have their engagement session. They wanted trees, water, mountain views, all that good stuff. We had been considering a few Colorado mountain locations until they came up with the perfect locale....a golf course! It has it all..trees, water, mountain views, and they love to golf together which made it the obvious choice for them. Lynn and I headed out on the fairways with them to shoot along....

As wedding photographers, we are asked pretty often if we have "any good wedding stories". Honestly, we never really had a very unique story until now: Luke & Libby's. They are an awesome couple, and had an absolutely fantastic wedding day. Preparations were downtown Denver, their ceremony was at the beautiful St. Eliz's downtown, and the reception at the Denver Performing Arts complex....and once again, gorgeous Colorado weather was cued up for the whole day. Everything couldn't have gone better...until about 11:30pm toward the very end of the reception. Luke was cutting a rug out on the dance floor and suddenly slid to the floor. A few of us walked over to him thinking he was goofing around, maybe mugging for the camera....not the case. We got closer and saw the worried look on his face. Uh-oh, he's not joking. Within seconds friends and family were at his side, tending to his dislocated kneecap! I can't tell you what a hard thing that was to see. Of all the things that you would expect to happen during an otherwise amazing celebration, this was not one of them. We have to hand it to Luke, he remained as calm as could be, grinning and bearing it all the way. The EMT's arrived with the stretcher on the dance floor, tended to him right away, and off they went to the emergency room -- the newlyweds: Mr. & Mrs. Luke & Libby Hanna. While not the ideal exit and ending to their day, they totally took it in stride, and wrote to us the next day that "the ER couple was recovering nicely and looking forward to some beach time in Mexico". If anyone earned it, they did.

Mark & Whitney Engagement

Mark & Whitney are one of those couples that are just fun to be around. We're reeealllly looking forward to their wedding at the Mt. Princeton Hot Springs in the Collegiate Peaks. How cool is that?! These guys are really laid back and were up for anything when it came down to their engagement shoot. Whitney said they had a bazillion pictures of themselves in the mountains, so we headed for downtown Platte River Park in Denver. Its an awesome place for photos, with a great mixture of nature and city....

This is one of our favorites. Cheers to Mark for carrying Whitney up and down the hill while we shot away! Cue the beautiful Colorado sky...

Maryland Visit pt.2

We visited my family a couple weeks ago, and had a great time hanging out with my Mom, sisters Laura and Amy, and our nieces Katie & Julie. In keeping with my family pet name of "Uncle Clicky" (for that matter, Lynn and I are both "Aunt & Uncle Clicky"), we took tons of images of the girls being the super cuties that they are. We had a crab feast with 3 dozen steamed crabs, corn on the cob, salad, and of course beer. This must be heaven. The girls didn't crack any shells, but Julie loved the crab meat and kept coming over to the table and asking for some more. She must have some of that baltimore blood in her after all...

Wine in the Woods

Lynn and I were back in Maryland last week visiting my family, and it happened to be the weekend of "Wine in the Woods" in Columbia. We spent a few hours in the afternoon at the festival, toting our wine sampler glasses around to all of Maryland's best vineyard tents. And for all you math wizards out there....Unlimited Tastings = (1) Great Time. My friend Bill, his wife Paige and their kids Georgia and Will came along for the fun. Instead of wine, Will got a bottle and Georgia got a milkshake. Yummay....

I must say that wine & friends are a great combination.

I know it sounds a little cliched, but the simple fact is that beauty is everywhere. Nothing makes me see that more than photography, and recognizing it has become such a part of my everyday being that I don't even think about it anymore. I just see it. It never ceases to amaze me how you can find fascination in the plain, ordinary and everyday. It's a simple concept, but when you get it into your consciousness things don't seem so ordinary anymore. One of my favorite places to look for the mundane is on the ground, and I take great pleasure in lying on the ground in the middle of the woods, or a meadow, or a hillside with my camera and seeing the world from inches high....getting up close and personal with things I'd otherwise walk by or even step on...then creating art from it. That totally does it for me, and is one of a million reasons why I love to shoot.

I recently read a passage by photographer David Baird that sums it all up in verse far superior to my rantings:

"Walk softly, lest in your haste
you miss a thousand things of beauty,
partly hidden or in plain sight
in the most mundane places.
In the big view, or in tiny crevices,
intriguing patterns may be left to
fade into grey environmental blur
without satisfying that human curiousity
that comes, not just with passing by,
but with pausing to see, understanding and feeling."

Jim and Catalina's Florida Wedding

We were so honored to photograph the wedding of long-time family friends, Jim Loveman and Catalina Asanza. Jim and Cat live in Phili, but they decided to get married in Hollywood, Florida where Catalina grew up. Their wedding weekend was full of golf-outings, a pig roast fiesta, and beach time for friends. The reception was held at the luxury (and we mean luxury!!) Diplomat Country Club and Spa. It has the air of an Italian villa with fountains, terraces and green rooftops hidden under fuschia bougainvillea. This is an EXCEPTIONAL resort with phenomenal service; we felt like stars!

Working with the Diplomat's Tracy Jovanovich, Jim and Cat chose the most beautiful colors and details for their wedding ~ be sure to check out their amazing cake and centerpieces!

Their friends came from all over the United States and the world, and it's not hard to figure out why. Jim and Cat are two of the most down-to-earth and generous couples we know. You just feel good being around them :) They are now on their honeymoon in Africa!! We can't wait to hear all their stories when they return.... Congratulations Jim and Catalina!

Our nephews Owen (2) and Wesley (3mos) are defintiely the cutest boys we know. We had a great time with them celebrating Easter weekend, complete with egg dyeing, easter egg hunt, and of course an impromptu photo shoot! Wesley was a natural in front of the camera and was smilin' away on his first photo shoot, and Owen got the hair gel and gave himself a stylin' hairdo...the kid's gonna break some hearts!

Great Canadian Tele Tour II

Last week I made a return trip to British Columbia to ski the Canadian Rockies and Selkirks. I met up with friends Chuck & Dan, and we ski toured in BC's backcountry, which is spectacular - cool valleys, awesome tree glades, and magnificent glaciers. B.C. is still sporting a 20 foot snowpack (you heard me right - 20 feet), and with snow stability & conditions ideal, we were able to tour up high on the glaciers and enjoy 2-4000ft. descents in glorious powder. I only shot video of the descents, but I came away with some decent images during the climbs. Thanks to Chuck for letting me take command of his Canon Elph, it was great to shoot lightweight again!

Crabcakes, hon!

I'm from Maryland, I lived in Baltimore, I love crabs. That's kinda how it works. So when our friend Laurie generously offered to bring back fresh Alaskan king crab legs from the Aleutian islands, we were psyched! Backfin meat is the best to use, and king crab legs you get at the store will have a large portion of the backfin meat on the ends. Pick that stuff clean, its the best meat! Here's some prep advice for making Maryland Crabcakes:

1) Mix together these for the filler: bread crumbs, chopped celery, onion and/or red pepper, 1 egg, mayonnaise, Worcestershire, pepper, salt, and most important: OLD BAY seafood seasoning. Please don't forget the Old Bay or forget about the "Maryland" part of your crabcakes. :)

2) Fold in the crabmeat & Shape into cakes as big as you like.

3)Melt butter in the fry pan and cook until brown, about 5 minutes per side.

Then eat em!

Clint & Megan ~ Breckenridge, CO

Clint and Megan are a super sweet couple from Denver. Their wedding is in August, but they wanted to have their engagement session around some snow. So we headed for the mountains of course! We picked downtown Breckenridge to get a little bit of everything: snow, mountains, mountain town...we found tons of cool places to photograph without walking more than a couple blocks, a very fun shoot!

Mike D's got the deuces wild

Mike D is the dog of our friends Stephan and Carrie. Mike is just a puppy, but he's a LOT of puppy. He's a huge German Wirehair/Rottweiler mix, huge in body and personality. Mike's one of the coolest looking dogs around with a wiry yellow beard and gazing green eyes, he already looks wise beyond his...well...year. We took care of Mike last week and had a blast. Mike and our dog Zula are best friends. Mike likes the older women, and Zula loves the younger men, they're perfect for each other. They love to play, fight, chase, and then sleep....Here's a couple shots Lynn took while Mike was lounging on the floor.

Lynn and I headed to Glenwood Springs last weekend to gather with friends (and their kids) for Lauren & Mike's baby shower. Their son is on the way and due next month! It's amazing how many kids are running around at our friend gatherings nowadays! Used to just be the young adults hanging out and boozin. Now there's bottles of formula and sippy cups thrown into the mix! Chocolate Country!

We were back east last week to celebrate Thanksgiving with the family. We had a great time with everyone, lots of eating, decorating the Christmas tree with our nieces....good wholesome fun. After the long weekend we drove my grandmother home in Pennsylvania. And that meant taking a detour through Hershey, PA...chocolate country! Its great driving down main street...uh I mean Chocolate Avenue.....even the street lights are chocolate kisses. All you need to do is roll all the windows down driving past the Hershey plant and smell cocoa in the air....Hershey, or Heaven? Either way, thank God for chocolate!

Kristin & J.R. ~ Colorado Backyard Beauty

Recently we photographed the wedding of Kristin & J.R. ~ a great couple here in Denver. Kristin's relatives generously offered up their home north of Boulder, CO for the ceremony and celebration, and wow what a beautiful place! They should start renting their place out for events. Timing was perfect for catching the last of the fall colors, as always making for great images and a beautiful wedding day for them....

We spent last week in Maryland to celebrate and relax with both our families together for the first time since the wedding. Asia Slideshow a success!

Tonight Lynn and I just gave our first slide presentation from our visit to Southeast Asia! It was a great time with lots of new faces and lots of friends to catch up with, all in all about 70 people in attendance. Not too shabby for a Thursday night! This was the first show we put together that included still images and video (we shot the best we could with our Digital Elph). It really adds a new dimension to the traditional slideshow, we think it really brought the audience into the whole travel experience. Here's a few samples from the show. Lynn and I are still reveling in the most amazing experience of getting married. We got engaged the end of March, started planning in May, and we got married September 10 - proving you can plan a wedding and have a blast doing it in 4 months! We're both amazed at how incredible a feeling it is. We had our wedding in the mountains of Colorado, and it was absolutely gorgeous with the yellow aspens, great weather for our outdoor ceremony, and family and friends to celebrate.

Here's a shot of our rings we took a few days ago on the last day of our honeymoon roadtrip around Colorado. The aspen leaves are a reminder of the surroundings that day, and the wheat represents a part of our ceremony where each person brought up a wheat stalk and gave us a wish, blessing or happy thought for our life together. A truly amazing part of the ceremony for us...talk about holding back the tears!

We must thank a few people for their efforts and just plain love that went into making our wedding the best day of our lives.

Honeymoon Roadtrip!

After deciding to skip hurricane-ravaged Puerto Vallarta, we opted to stay in beautiful Colorado for our honeymoon for one of our favorite things---ROADTRIP! We borrowed our friends Stephan & Carrie's Westy (THANKS GUYS!) and hit the road....A gorgeous tour of Colorado, we visited some favorite areas and found some new ones. Sunshine, blue skies, rain, snow...we had it all, man we love this state!....Here's the first batch of images, enjoy!

First stop, the western slope to Palisade for the fresh fruit...

...and the grapes! We hopped on the bikes and toured the valley, tasting only a handful of the area's 40 vineyards, but ohhh so good. So many wineries, so little time, so fun to ride when you're buzzed on wine...

Mmmm, breakfast....grilled bagels with honey cinnamon butter and nectarines!

Lynn shooting the yellow aspens up on Grand Mesa, at 11,000ft, its the world's largest flat-topped mountain. Thats big. And beautiful.

On to Ridgeway in the San Juan Mtns. We treated ourselves to studio apartment lodging, hot springs, and massages!

And pumpkin ravioli with blue cheese cream sauce!.....and Lynn's new ring :)

We headed up to Yankee Boy Basin out of Ouray, one of the most bee-you-tiful places anywhere. We had an awesome bluebird dayhike up to Mt. Sneffels 14,150ft. Lynn carried our food, and I lugged up the 4x5 field camera up for some large format image-making.

Its always fun to wake up to new snow. Hey this ain't Mexico is it?

Definitely made for some great fall foliage photography with the snow coated evergreens.

The snow was blowing off the ground in Crested Butte, Lynn captured this gust beautifully.

And lots of snow on top of Cottonwood Pass. muddy wet roads on one side...

...and plenty dry on the other to haul ass on the bike!

Our last stop was further north to Fraser/Winter Park for one last swanky stay in a cabin in the woods, mimosas and truffles for breakfast, and hot-tubbin before heading home. What a trip!

We rode bikes to our ceremony site and I (symbolically) carried Lynn across the threshold...

We saw some awesome sunsets, here's a reflection of one of them in a pond near Devil's Thumb Ranch...

And one last soothing hot tub before heading home. We even ordered up a ranch burger and home style potatoes to go!

Welcome to our blog....We are David & Lynn Townsend, officially as of our wedding two weeks ago! More on our amazing day in a later post. Needless to say, this summer has been an amazing time, starting down the new paths of our own marriage and our joined photography careers. Early 2006 we combined our wedding photography to form David Lynn Photography. We love photographing weddings together, and the greatest reward is hearing the comments and seeing the reaction of the people whose weddings we've photographed.
